8th House in Astrology...

Happiness in the 8th house is only found
by letting go of the desire to control
others or gain through them.

As the most powerful house of the zodiac, the eighth house represents the ultimate prices we pay in life. The challenge of the eighth house is to "let go", stop fighting for what you want, and learn to truly give with an honest soul. This is why it is about death, taxes, shared resources, and sex. Death is the ultimate in "letting go". The best sex is experienced when we give ourselves completely to our mate. Success in the world of taxes and shared resources is only found with acceptance and honest dealings. To conquer the eighth house is to accept that physical death is inevitable and that other symbolic deaths occur every day. To conquer this house is to accept that we always have to give to the world and others. Fighting these things will always result in greater losses. As the last of the relationship houses in the zodiac, people with strong eighth houses in their natal charts often experience emotions too deep for words with an understanding of human nature that is commonly explained as psychic.

The eighth house is where we experience relationships at their deepest level.

They have lives where relationships are experienced so deeply that they are sometimes shunned because they provoke feelings which are too painful and powerful. Eight-house people are both blessed and cursed. They often experience a great deal of pain because they feel every nuance of human relationships, but they also have a deep understanding of the pain and flaws in others, which allows them to compassionately accept people for whom they are. In reality, to enjoy peace and happiness in the eighth house, a person must be able to let go of any selfish ideas and ways. Freedom from the pain of this house is found by giving freely to others by using the gift of deep eighth-house understanding. To prepare for the universal houses which begin in the ninth house, eighth-house people need to let go of people and accept that people, and the world have their own agendas which they cannot control.Often, eighth-house people are interested in and have an insightful understanding of astrology and psychology.
They are forever intrigued by their insights into the human experience of emotions and relationships. Social work and counseling are excellent occupational choices for eighth-house people. The deeper reasons behind events in life and an understanding of the grand schemes going on in the world are sought by those with strong eighth houses. People with strong eighth houses never believe that events occur in vacuums. There are always reasons and the eighth-house person is the one who sees the themes and the bigger pictures that others miss.

Planets in the 8th House...

Sun in the 8th House...

An eighth-house sun is constantly driven to engage in relationships and they spend most of their time entangled in them. This can be a painful placement where the eighth-house person gives too much in relationships and ends up feeling used. The sun always wants to shine, and in the eighth house, it wants to shine through deep, intimate relationships. Unfortunately, not everyone is as passionate as them, which can cause a great deal of pain for an eighth-house sun. People are often casual about relationships and eighth-house suns often experience many ups and downs at the hands of these whimsical people. A father who was lost in his own emotion or caused emotional pain is common for the chart holder with this placement, and finding peace with this becomes a life-long quest sought in the chart holder's intimate relationships throughout their life. Yet it always seems there is something lacking. The void seems impossible to fill because the eighth-house person relies on other people to fill it for them through relationships. Although they feel driven to find themselves and shine in this world through other people, they find more inner strength by learning to shine on their own. Healthy relationships are their lifeblood and when the eighth house sun doesn't have to waste energy battling with unhealthy relationships, they have freedom to grow in their own right. The greatest gift for an eighth-house sun person is a deeply committed, soulful relationship that allows them to shine by giving themselves to another person while also learning to grow on their own.

Moon in the 8th House...

Emotional peace and comfort are sought through intimate relationships when the moon is in the eighth house and there is constant turmoil over who gives more and cares more in these relationships. Those with an eighth-house moon don't enjoy casual relationships. They take intimate relationships very seriously and know very quickly whether a potential mate is either someone they want or don't want. These people are often obsessed with their relationships because they put all of their focus and energy into them, unconsciously focusing their entire lives around their mate, and giving more than they should while wondering why their mate doesn't give as much to them. Happiness is found when the eighth-house moon person brings the unconscious into consciousness and realizes that they expect too much from their partners. It is their choice to focus their whole lives around their mate, and expecting their mate to do the same thing is selfish and only leads to pain and disappointment. The eighth-house moon needs to learn self-sufficiency rather than expecting all their needs to be met through relationships. Extremely sensitive to the unspoken communication, these people experience other people on a feeling level. They assess people quickly and accurately with their feelings, and these feelings cannot be translated into words. This is an emotional weight carried around by the eighth-house moon because it is felt and not expressed. It becomes burdensome. Peace is found when they let go of these feelings and they let go of their expectations in relationships. In the eighth house, the moon needs to satisfy its need to care for another person without expecting anything in return. Satisfying the moon's need to probe and understand can be shifted to worldly issues like politics, psychology or astrology which helps to shift the focus away from the self, and therefore, freeing the eighth-house moon. This chart holder's mother is perceived as very emotional and passionate. Yet the chart holder never feels completely connected with her. This missing connection is forever sought through intimate relationships and by seeking greater meaning in understanding the grand scheme of the world. There are often gains or inheritances from women.

Mercury in the 8th House...

Mercury always helps to lighten a house and the eighth house can really use some lightening. Being able to discuss the deep emotions of the eighth house helps the chart holder free themselves from the pain this house can bring. The eighth house of intimate relationships benefits from Mercury's airy detachment. Mercury doesn't allow the chart holder to get weighed down in emotion and keeps issue in the conscious rather than unconscious realm. Because the eighth house is a water house, so many of the problems experienced here are due to an inability to understand and express them accurately. Floating around in misunderstood emotions can be painful. Mercury can sort through these feelings and understand them rationally, releasing the chart holder from the pain of unconscious emotion. Or, Mercury can simply dismiss the feelings as irrational and unnecessary. Either way, Mercury in the eighth house acts as a pressure-relief valve and is a beneficial placement.

Venus in the 8th House...

One of the best placements in astrology, Venus in the eighth house brings finesse, beauty and pleasure to the eighth house. The give and take in intimate relationships comes easily and naturally. Eighth-house Venus chart holders are comfortable with sex and appreciate the sensual pleasures it brings. Venus is able to enjoy the eighth house without letting its issue get too heavy. It is happy to accept what it gets from the world and other people without expecting a lot in return or easily feeling cheated. Although, never forget that it does value fairness. This placement lends kindness to intimate relationships with a patient understanding of the shortcomings of others. Inevitable challenges that the world brings like deaths and taxes are accepted easily with Venus in the eighth house.

Mars in the 8th House...

An eighth-house Mars can be a challenging placement. Mars represents the "will" of the chart holder. When Mars is in the eighth house of give and take in the world and intimate relationships, it can get intensely frustrated. Mars has the most difficultly letting go of its own needs and wants because its whole purpose is to satisfy the will of the chart holder. When the will seeks satisfaction through other people and things which are beyond anyone's control in the world, it will constantly get stifled by obstacles and road blocks. Long-term battles in relationships can ensue over perceptions of what's fair. Problems with taxes are common because Mars refuses to let go of what it sees as its possession. Issues of emotional control in relationships can erupt into screaming matches that never find resolution because Mars finds it so difficult to give.

Jupiter in the 8th House...

Lucky Jupiter in the eighth house is truly a gift. Jupiter always gains through others when it falls in the eighth house of the natal chart, and of course, it doesn't even have to try. It isn't because Jupiter is selfish. Jupiter is actually generous and giving in the eighth house, and this generosity always finds its way back to Jupiter. The give and take of the eighth house takes place effortlessly with Jupiter here. Jupiter's freedom loving, universal outlook on life refuses to get bogged down in intensely emotional relationship issues. Rather, ending relationships or dead end situations is preferred with Jupiter in the eighth house. Perhaps this is why Jupiter is usually the recipient of gifts in the eighth house. By not tolerating selfish behavior in others, Jupiter finds itself in relationships with giving people.

Saturn in the 8th House...

Saturn in the eighth house finds it very difficult to let go of anything, and although that makes this placement indicative of a long life, it is often a long life of struggling in intimate relationships. But eventually Saturn always manages to teach its lesson. The chart holder with this position eventually learns to let go later in life, but until then, Saturn in the eighth house casts its heavy, worrisome and negative attitude into relationships. The chart holder feels pressure to enter into initimate relationships, then once involved in them, never stops worrying about losing the other person. The chart holder always feels that their partner isn't committed enough in the relationship and doesn't give enough. The stress and depression over this dynamic shows through in the chart holder's personality and actually drives their partner away, perpetuating the problem for the chart holder. Early in life, there is often loss for the person with Saturn in their eighth house surrounding their father, or the father is seen as overly serious especially regarding money, which serves to set up this whole dynamic from an early age. Money is often lost in relationships and delays in inheritances are found with an eighth-house Saturn. Again, this represents the difficultly in learning and accepting the natural give and take in life. Those with an eighth-house Saturn are acutely aware of the long-term obligations that begin with only one gesture. For them, it is better to refuse a gift or charity than to accept it, because with it, there will be a long-term obligation for repayment. This placement is excellent for work in finance and banking where Saturn's cautious and serious nature is beneficial. In relationships however, Saturn must learn to let go of its tight grip on people and money. When Saturn eventually realizes that more is gained by not holding on so tightly, the chart holder finally finds happiness.

Uranus in the 8th House...

Watch out for sudden, unexpected losses when Uranus is in the eighth house, like a spouse who suddenly files for divorce or an unexpected tax audit. These events are unexpected to the chart holder, but people who know the chart holder may see these things coming. Uranus can be oblivious, not noticing things that others see as obvious. Its detached, freedom-seeking nature is always looking elsewhere rather than at what is happening in the here and now. Then the chart holder is shocked when their life gets turned upside down, but had they been paying attention, they could have avoided it. Uranus doesn't feel comfortable with the intensely deep commitments of the eighth house. A habit of unconsciously separating from partners is common with an eighth-house Uranus. Uranus doesn't even realize it's doing this until suddenly, they are getting a divorce. A quiet rebelliousness toward taxes and those frustrating monetary obligations in life often leads an eighth-house Uranus into problems when it tries to deal with these issues in its usual unconventional ways. Odd planet that it is, Uranus gets flipped around in the eighth house. Here, Uranus needs to learn to let go of its need to let go. The eighth house is about intimacy and the dynamic of give and take. These ideas are foreign and distasteful to Uranus who always wants to break free. While most planets need to learn a little detachment in the eighth house, Uranus needs to learn to balance its detached nature with a necessary amount of intimacy.

Neptune in the 8th House...

Blurred lines in intimate relationships are found when Neptune is in the eighth house. The rules surrounding what's given and received in the relationships are not clear and abuse is common with Neptune as the victim. In the extreme cases, this can mean sexual abuse or it can simply indicate a tendency to allow oneself to give without setting any boundaries. Neptune is sensitive, compassionate and empathetic. It wants to give and it honestly expects nothing in return, setting itself up for abusive situations. However, Neptune is also skilled at reading between the lines and understanding the unspoken communication of the soul. At some point, this gives Neptune the insight to realize when it's time to defend itself because the scales have tipped beyond what is helpful for either party in the relationship. Neptune needs to learn to take from relationships as much as it gives. Part of this unwillingness to take comes from Neptune's need for freedom. By taking, we create obligation. Realizing this, Neptune knows it keeps its freedom by giving, but loses it by taking. Confusion and messiness regarding taxes and monetary obligations to others are common with an eighth-house Neptune because the planet prefers to pretend it lives in a world without structure and rules.

Pluto in the 8th House...

The ultimate match-up, Pluto is at home in the eighth house, but it isn't always cozy. Letting go is Pluto's greatest challenge, and in its own house, it is really put to the test. Intimate relationships are taken seriously, often too seriously, and there is difficultly opening up and bringing relationship issues out of the darkness of the unspoken, and into the light of conversation. Much of the feelings are unconscious and the chart holder feels compulsions that may be expressed through verbal or physical outbursts. An eighth-house Pluto can turn every facet of a relationship into a power struggle until Pluto manages to drive the other person away, or the other person capitulates under Pluto's pressure. When relationships do end, Pluto still doesn't stop fighting. Divorces that go on for years with endless fights over money are common with an eighth-house Pluto. Power struggles with family members or deep losses from a young age are common with Pluto in the eighth house of a natal chart. These losses and struggles continue to fester throughout the chart holder's life in all of their intimate relationships. Finding the ability to "let go" of power in relationships and finding the ability to let life take its course without trying to manipulate it frees Pluto in the eighth house to find happiness.
