How Emotional are You?
The Astrology of Emotion...

Of course, we all experience emotion, but some astrological signs have their emotions triggered more easily, feel them more intensely and take longer to process them than other signs. The way each sign experiences emotion makes them neither better nor worse than any other, but this dynamic certainly sets each sign apart.
Picture

Scroll to the bottom of the page for a complete ranking of the zodiac signs from most to least emotional.

Most Emotional Signs...

Moderately Emotional Signs...

Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Less Emotional Signs...

Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Least Emotional Signs...

Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

What do we mean by Emotional?

We are defining a more emotional person as a person who absorbs and processes emotion slowly. Emotional people feel comfortable with emotion. They let it brew within them and they fully experience it. Conversely, a less emotional person pushes away emotion, denies it and feels awkward dealing with it.

The Moon Sign is Key...

When reading the rankings below, it is key to understand that more than any other placement, the moon sign is most representative of the emotional nature of a person. For example, a moon in Pisces person is going to show the characteristics described below more than a sun in Pisces person. Also, having many planets in one sign will make the descriptions more applicable.

Water Versus Air - The Most & Least Emotional Zodiac Signs...

It's easy to assume that because air signs are the least emotional, they are the best at handling emotion. This is not true. Air signs are the least emotional because they avoid emotion. They push it away and try to ignore it. Emotion is awkward for them. They don't really understand emotion, and they refuse to absorb it and process it deeply. Conversely, water signs can appear to be the most emotionally immature signs because they take in emotion so deeply that it seems like they don't know how to work through it to move past it. In reality, they are simply comfortable living in a world of emotion. They take their time to experience it fully and move through it without missing any aspect of it. It isn't awkward for them and they understand that emotion is a part of the experience of life. Avoiding it is equivalent to shunning a part of life. Even painful emotion is appreciated by water signs because it's a part of true experience of the grand scheme of their life. This difference between water signs and air signs is glaringly apparent when an emotional crisis presents itself in your own life and you go to water or air sign for support. The water signs are comfortable with the notion of lending their shoulder for you to cry on so you can work through it. They are patient with you. In contrast, air signs try to move you through it quickly to ease their own awkwardness, and because they honestly believe it is the best way to deal with it. Neither is correct or incorrect and you may prefer one or the other, but difference is real.

Of course, we all experience emotion, but some astrological signs have their emotions triggered more easily, feel them more intensely and take longer to process them than other signs. The way each sign experiences emotion makes them neither better nor worse than any other, but this dynamic certainly sets each sign apart.

The Signs from Most to Least Emotional...

Water Signs Become One with Emotion...
As the signs most comfortable with emotion, we say the water signs are the most emotional. Whether it's pleasant or unpleasant emotion, they immerse themselves it in and take their time in actively processing it. Their feminine nature never resists it as foreign or unnecessary. It's fully experienced until it's completely owned and incorporated into their psyche. Emotion is felt so deeply that every emotional experience becomes part of the story of "them". From this comes life-long pain and grudges, but also deep love and passion.

#1 Cancer

The sign that lives and breathes emotion, Cancer's experience of the world is on a completely emotional level. They base their decisions, their words and their behavior on how they feel. A fear of getting emotionally wounded is always present and makes them cautious. Each Cancer person has their own personal triggers, and they drive deeply into emotion when they encounter one. Cancers go into a completely emotional mode, and fully experience all facets of their feelings. Generally, they wait a while before expressing their feelings to other people. They see a wisdom in completely understanding their feelings before talking about them. This way, they are sure of exactly how to react without giving or losing too much in the end. But while they're going through this process, their feelings are written all over their faces. Some Cancers never do fully express their feelings. They hold them in for what seems like forever, only giving hints through their words and body language. Others completely expel their feelings with words, and behavior. Regardless, their feelings are of a raw, pure nature. Other people always know if a Cancer is upset whether the Cancer person openly admits to it or not. Even when they don't voice their emotions, their body language is pure and unfiltered. Therefore, when the feelings are negative and dark, Cancers can be extremely hurtful to others. An upset and hurt Cancer person can be extremely hurtful without uttering a word. Their body language and aura can cut. However, when the feelings are positive and loving, Cancers know how to express these feelings in a pure and clear manner as well. They state their feelings of love directly and they are willing to commit to it easily. Cancers love the feeling of safety a committed relationship offers, and when in one, they are free to express the depth of their passion.

#2 Pisces

Pisces feel a lot of emotion, but they aren't always sure what they are feeling, and they find it difficult to clearly convey their emotions to others. It gets cloudy. There's a lot of denial and repression with Pisces. As the most mature sign in the zodiac, they have a nagging voice telling them many of their feelings are selfish or immature. This can make Pisces hard to understand. It also makes it difficult for them to clearly communicate their feelings. When a Pisces is in an emotional state, and they have feelings they need to express, they often talk in circles. It's hard for them to directly state their feelings. They may hint about them or veil them in small insults. These build until they finally get them all out in the open. When the feelings are too powerful to express little-by-little, they go into incomprehensible rants that go way beyond the point at hand. They reach back into the ancient history of a relationship and drag up things that are considered by other people to be dead. Pisces need to cycle through the feelings in their own way, and although it can often seem crazy and definitely confusing, they eventually work through them if given the space and time. In terms of expressing loving feelings, Pisces emotionally cloudy nature makes them extremely romantic. Expressing their love by creating the right mood with music and candles, Pisces scattered nature lends creativity to their expression of love.

#3 Scorpio

The water sign that has intense feelings, but doesn't want to show them, Scorpios will fool you. Like the other two water signs, Cancer and Pisces, Scorpio is full of emotion and has many triggers. What makes them different from Cancer and Pisces is their extremely powerful desire to hide them. So, you can't always tell what they're feeling. This is different from Cancer's fear of getting hurt or Pisces unconscious knowledge of how immature and selfish feelings can be. With Scorpios it's about ego and power.
Scorpios don't want to give anyone the upper hand by exposing their feelings. It can be painful for them. Their feelings are just as prevalent as Cancer's or Pisces', but Scorpios know they can be a weakness. So, they keep them inside, and they can really fester. Scorpios work through their feelings by drawing upon their inner resolve and self-control. If this doesn't eliminate them, they work through them by enacting real change with their actions. They go out into the world and do the things they need to do to solve the problems that triggered any bad emotions. With good feelings of love, Scorpios are more expressive. They can be extremely passionate lovers and they use their same method of expressing their emotions through real actions when it comes to love. They will do real things to express their love, like doing favors or making commitments.
Earth Signs Absorb Emotion...
Able to absorb emotion while still recognizing that it is separate from who they are, earth signs have a realistic approach to emotion. Their feminine nature feels it deeply and accept it even if it's negative. In fact, their practical, realistic nature may be a little too accepting when it comes to negative emotion, giving earth signs a serious and often melancholy tone.

#4 Capricorn

The ultra-realistic outlook of Capricorn colors its emotional world. Capricorn people tend to focus on negative emotions and easily fall into sadness or just general bitchiness. They tend to interpret everything in the worst light possible. At times it seems they are in a competition to win a "who has it worse" prize. They complain that no one else in the world sees things correctly, meaning, the way they see things. They complain about having the weight of the world on their shoulders while everyone else has it easy. This dynamic, colored with a touch of generalized resentment, which they generally express with sarcasm, gives Capricorns a heavy emotional tone that is delightfully spiked with humor. Capricorns have long fuses, and because they usually expect the worst anyway, their negative emotions aren't triggered often. What's more their complaining acts a steady pressure-release valve that keeps them from exploding. So, they aren't prone to angry outbursts, but they are a sign with a large presence, and if pushed far enough, they will express their fair share of anger. Of course, Capricorns also feel positive emotions and they can be very affectionate. Their large egos can make their affection seem condescending at times, like they're the parent and you're the child. But it is genuine and their offers to help, which are frequent, are real because they can feel your pain. Empathy is sewn into their fabric. Overall, they are realists. They don't automatically look for the silver lining just to make life seem happier. Something has to be obviously positive for a Capricorn to go with the happy feelings. It works as a defense mechanism in that they aren't likely to be surprised by bad news if they always expect the worst. What's more, they never want to be made a fool by going with a good feeling only to find later that it was temporary or fraudulent. They deeply appreciate loyalty, respect and real help in working toward their goals. A joyful feeling of satisfaction is experienced by Capricorns who are surrounded by people who exhibit these qualities.

#5 Virgo

Virgos absorb a lot of emotion without showing any in return. Because they love to observe and critique, they tend to sit quietly and just allow things to happen. They remove themselves from direct interaction with the world and people this way. It isn't that they are detached or uninvolved, but they do have a sense that keeping a safe distance from the nonsense is proper and smart. When their emotions are triggered, their response is usually verbal. They are quick with their words and use them efficiently. Coming up with a short statement that both makes their point and expels their emotions is actually one of their talents. A common trigger for negative emotion in them is a feeling of being used. They are constantly trying to be efficient and they are willing to help people, but too often this becomes a slippery slope into a feeling of getting used. Virgos often react with some nasty words and a refusal to do anything until it's resolved. They greatly appreciate kindness in others and can easily fall in love with someone who is simply kind and helpful. Positive feelings are triggered in them when they feel appreciated and when they are in relationships that involve mutual caring in terms of behavior. Words are their play thing and they know words can be hollow. It's actions that spur loving feelings in Virgos and that's when their sensual, earthy loving nature shows through. Bottom line, Virgos can let a lot of things go and not get affected by too many negative feelings as long as they are appreciated.

#6 Taurus

The solid, patient Taurus isn't rattled easily by emotion. Often, their practical, common-sense nature sees even happy, joyful emotion as ungrounded in reality and therefore somewhat silly and fleeting. Taureans just see the world too clearly to get caught up in too much emotion. When the reasons behind emotions are seen clearly, it's easy to dismiss them as irrelevant. Yes, they are there, but they are like the smell of fresh-baked cookies. The aroma is real and it's nice to breathe it in and enjoy it, but Taureans always have their eye on the bottom line - eating the cookies. So as a Taurus moves through life, they always have this realistic, common-sense approach that keeps them focused on the bottom line. Emotions can take you off course. They can make it harder to reach your end goals, like actually eating the cookies. If you sit around enjoying the aroma for too long, someone else might eat the cookies before you get a chance. So although Taurus is a sensual sign that is extremely in tune with nuance and subtleties, it never loses sight of reality. Taureans see negative emotions the same way. They know that getting caught up in anger or sadness is just impractical. It weakens you and takes up too much time and energy. Fortunately, their emotions aren't triggered often due to their practical outlook. However, Taureans often fall prey to jealousy and possessiveness. They are possession oriented people and when they either can't have something they want or have something, or even worse someone, taken from them, they get very angry. These are common triggers for them. Assuredly, however, they will immediately work to rectify the situation by finding a realistic, practical solution to their problem.
Fire Signs React to Emotion...
The masculine energy of the fire signs puts up a guard against the possible vulnerabilities that emotion creates. Emotion stirs fire signs into an excited states. As soon as they encounter it, they react to it. If it's positive emotion, fire signs become exuberant and expressive, sending the positive emotion right back out into the world. If it's negative, fire signs normally translate the emotion into anger or frustration. They complain or even fight.

#7 Aries

With Aries, more than any other sign, the sun and moon differ in their emotional expression. The Aries moon person is much more emotional than the Aries sun person. The sign of Aries is, more than anything, aggressive and the element of fire is reactive. So, with Aries, you have reactive aggression. When an Aries encounters an emotional trigger, they react aggressively. They are warriors at heart and their fighter mentality seeks to immediately conquer any challenge or problem. Difficult feelings, whether simply sad or dreadfully painful, are dealt with by fighting their source. Aries never skirt around an issue. They seek out the source of their pain and metaphorically kill it by pushing it away. They are not afraid to express themselves and they have no problem confronting their emotions. Yet, a clear understanding of their feelings can be clouded by their fighting spirit and their unwillingness to be patient and experience the emotion before expelling it. Their need to immediately express and conquer bad feelings can leave them little time to actually understand their feelings. At worst, they react in an explosion, often with yelling or sometimes by damaging property. Then, once the initial expression is over, they contemplate, not the emotion, but the ramifications of their reaction to the emotion. The same is true for good, positive feelings. Aries express joy openly and enthusiastically. They charge into love relationships and express love just as aggressively as they express their anger. They can be real roller coasters of emotion, but they are always authentic and they move through emotion quickly.

#8 Sagittarius

The smart ass of the zodiac, Sagittarius loves to talk about their emotions. They refuse to just let things simmer. Whether they are frustrated, angry or in love, they never let the feeling just sit around and brew. They are expressive about how they feel, whether good or bad. A blunt style that doesn't hold back makes them easy to read. They lack any great depth of emotion, but they have a lot of emotion in that they have a lot of triggers and they are quite expressive about their feelings. They are quick to complain, quick to argue and also quick to compliment. They go up and down quickly, but not too deeply. They express it all as it comes and dispel it quickly. Like no other sign, Sagittarius people have fun with their emotions. Their astrologically mature nature gives them a high vantage point and helps them see how emotions can often be selfish and immature. They still feel them and certainly express them, but they also quickly think them through and resolve them. Sagittarius people often analyse their feelings and qualify them. They determine if they are valid or just primal and reactive. They find the sources of their emotions and work them through efficiently. They react quickly when their emotions are triggered and they can scream loudly and use words that cut deeply because of their accuracy. Language is indeed their primary tool in dealing with their emotions. You know they are at the final stage of dealing with their feelings when they start making jokes about them. Sagittarians do prefer to keep things light, which is why they get over things quickly, and it also goes hand-in-hand with their lack of depth. So, take the good with the bad. They don't go too deeply into the bad emotions, but they also don't swim too deeply into the passion of love.

#9 Leo

With Leo, you have a longer fuse than with the other two fire signs, Sagittarius and Aries. Leo's emotions are not triggered as easily or as often. As the fixed, fire sign, Leo has some patience. They can keep their fiery temperament from erupting longer than Aries and Sagittarius, but when it does erupt, it's serious. There is a largeness to Leo's emotional expression that comes from their ability to hold it back in the first place. Leo has just enough patience and calm resolve to let emotion fester and build to an unhealthy level. When it's released, it really can resemble the sudden roar of a lion. The same lion who, seconds ago, appeared to be so calm they may have been sleeping, roars like they were just stabbed with a knife through their spine. It's intense. The least emotional of the fire signs, Leo prefers to remain above the fray. Yet, no matter how hard they try to resist the urge to wave their fiery flames when emotion strikes, the fire always burns through and into the world. It's their nature. As fire signs always do, they get angry. Anger is their primary release valve. Negative emotion is most often expressed as anger. It's when the anger no longer serves to relieve the pain that Leo is really in a bad state. Like the lion, they have a limited energy reserve. The cycle goes something like this: They first resist the negative emotion, so when it persists, it builds and it burns. Then they roar with anger, and it's over as quickly as it started. Unfortunately, as we all know, anger is not usually the solution, and when it isn't, Leo is like a lion cast out of pride. They close in on themselves and retreat to a dark, depressed, private place where they simply wait. But, Leo doesn't have the tools of the more emotional signs, like the water signs, who can swim comfortably in emotion until it passes. When they can't expel their emotion, it makes them uncomfortable. So it doesn't last long. Unlike the water signs, they can let go and they want to let go. They prefer to be free from the shackles of emotional pain. It doesn't take long for them to work through it and move forward to a happier state.
Air Signs Block Out Emotion...
As with the fire signs, air signs see emotion as dangerous. But air signs go a step further and also see emotion as foreign. They try their best to avoid it completely by blocking it. Even positive emotion can create an awkwardness for them. Expressions  of loving feelings or attraction can often seem canned or contrived because they resist the vulnerability emotions create. Negative emotions are blocked. They are seen as crude and too difficult to translate into thoughts or words.

#10 Libra

The sign that sees negative emotions like anger and jealousy as impolite and crude, Libra tries to avoid emotion unless it is positive. Libras push away negative emotion or try not to notice it in the first place. It's almost a denial technique, like a switch they turn on to block out the negative things around them. To others, it can make them seem like oblivious, "air-heads", but they are just trying to stay above the drama and keep things nice and pretty. Despite Libra's best effort, they do get dragged into anger or sadness once in a while. It's a funny thing to see when it's anger. The cheerful, polite Libra suddenly transforms into a warrior. They crush the source of their anger with tremendous force because it gets them through it quickly. Libras can be extremely aggressive when the situation gives them no other options. When it's sadness, Libras cycle through it quickly. They think positive thoughts and pick themselves up by shopping, partying or pampering themselves. Libra's upbeat nature is perfectly comfortable with joyful and positive feelings. They know how to express them clearly and spread their good feelings around to others. They are still an air sign, however, so their cheerfulness can appear a bit contrived at times. Sometimes they wear their good feelings like a billboard. For some reason they feel the need to broadcast their good feelings to everyone. Yet, it works for them. People like it. In terms of love, Libra lays it on thick. They seem to literally adore the people the love, but their passion doesn't go to great depths. As an air sign, they keep their wits about them. Always evaluating the relationship, Libras are ready to leave when things aren't fair or they feel mistreated. Then, just like they suddenly become a warrior when they are pushed to anger, they can suddenly become cold as ice when they are treated unfairly.

#11 Gemini

Geminis are fast-paced, efficient, and factual. They live in their minds. They filter experiences through their intellect not their emotions. To a Gemini, emotions are messy, confusing and slow them down. Emotions are neither right or wrong, and they can't be logically processed or easily discarded as correct or incorrect. Therefore Geminis simply ignore them for the most part - especially when it comes to negative emotions, which are heavy and burdensome. Geminis don't have the patience to wade through heavy emotions. As the mutable, air sign of the zodiac, Gemini is the lightest, most transient and fastest moving of the signs. They are like feathers floating from here and there, and they don't want to get tied down into anything for very long. Keeping things on intellectual level rather than a physical or emotional level keeps Geminis moving. It allows them to remain detached and impartial. It gives them freedom. So, Gemini's thoughts, words, and ideas constitute their comfort zone. Ideally their world is one of reason and purpose. Therefore, they have very few emotional triggers in the first place. They aren't easily drawn into an emotional state because they operate in a world of facts and reason. In fact, a common trigger for anger in Geminis is being told they are wrong about something. Any affront to reason or correctness will anger a Gemini, and they are sharp-tongued with their expression of anger. Their anger is expressed quickly and they generally use words that are sharp and accurate. Otherwise, Geminis are amazingly capable of avoiding negative emotions by looking at the world as a flow chart of intellectual decisions. Every problem has a solution. Avoiding negative emotions is simply a matter of making correct decisions and quickly solving problems. Positive emotions are expressed easily. Their expression is light and breezy, with an easy-flowing energy.

#12 Aquarius

Emotion actually makes Aquarians uncomfortable. Even good emotions, like passionate love feelings or extreme joy can be awkward for them. They are constantly thinking about the correct way to behave according to their personal, moral standards. So, experiencing too much happiness or passion could be seen as being self-absorbed. Or, if the happiness or passion isn't shared and accepted by the people around them, they can feel out of place. Aquarius' high level of self-awareness makes them concerned about how their emotional expression affects the emotions of the people around them. As the air sign most concerned with high standards of behavior, Aquarius is constantly evaluating situations, other people and themselves according to these standards. Because emotion is spontaneous, unpredictable and based on personal experience, it is difficult for them to evaluate it as worthy or appropriate. So, if they can't immediately qualify it as acceptable to their own set of moral standards, they push it away. This happens more often than not because emotion is hard to define and it doesn't always have a definite reason or purpose. When it is a negative emotion, like anger or jealousy, that is clearly unreasonable, immature or simply crude, they will try to either push it away quickly without expressing it in their behavior or they will express it very quickly with an extremely accurate attack on its source. Rather than live in a world of emotion, Aquarians prefer to live in a world of thought and reason. So, they filter their emotions intellectually and move through them quickly. Aquarians avoid interactions with people that may lead to heavy emotional exchanges. It's easier to skip an issue than pursue it and risk a dramatic emotional display on the part of the other person that they will have to find a way to diffuse.
