One of the most serious signs of the zodiac, Scorpio is intense, passionate and extremely careful in life. They are confident and have a strong sense of themselves, taking themselves as seriously as anyone or anything in life. As they mature, this confident and serious nature can sometimes seem arrogant and condescending, but it isn't their intention to appear this way. They generally speak slowly and choose their words carefully. Taking their time with most things, they are a fixed sign, so they are patient and able to focus. They rarely take anything lightly and prefer depth over frivolity.

Never naive, they understand the dark side of life and assume people are untrustworthy until they prove themselves otherwise. A Scorpio will listen to a person speak, while watching for cues of dishonesty.

Furthermore, they don't make any effort to be polite, considerate, or forgiving in discussing it. They don't run from difficult or uncomfortable topics or conversations. As the sign of the underworld, they are comfortable in the dark side of life. Scorpio is also the sign of intimate relationships, but their familiarity with life's darker elements, and their consequently cautious behavior, puts them in a constant struggle between merging with another person in a relationship and retaining the control they ultimately have to sacrifice by submitting to a relationship.

They will never want to admit it, but they are a little afraid of relationships. They recognize on a very deep level the responsibility involved in a relationship and how much of themselves they could have to give up for another person. Whether it is giving up money, time, or emotional energy, Scorpio feels the possibility of loss intensely.

They spend a lot of energy protecting themselves from this loss and from getting hurt. As much as they want to merge with another person in a relationship, they can't help being acutely aware of the possibility of getting hurt. The use of power and control is their mechanism to avoid the possible loss and pain. In fact, the use of this mechanism is so unconsciously ingrained in them that most don't realize they are doing it.

They may see it as common sense or just plain good judgment, which it most often is. When a Scorpio does take the plunge and ends up hurt, it can be a monumental task to get over it and many never really do. They often have difficulty with forgiving and letting go of hurt feelings which is why they are so careful in the first place. Even with all of the care taken, most Scorpios do end up in good relationships and they are wonderfully committed mates. They will be the most passionate lovers, and hold nothing back when they feel completely safe. Even if they are a bit possessive, it's worth it. And make no mistake, the care they take in relationships doesn't stop them from having as many casual flings as possible before they commit. Casual sex and relationships are two separate things. Scorpios will always enjoy sex even if they are careful about the relationships. The same care given in the area of relationships is found regarding money.

When it comes to money, they are extremely careful. They know how much everything should cost. The carefulness comes from a need for control and an acute sense of value. If you don't know the value of an item and what it should cost, you don't have control. The storekeeper would hold all of the cards rather than the Scorpio. That just won't do. The Scorpio will know all of the feature comparisons and will remember them. The Scorpio will know how much value each feature of the item has, and will be able to calculate them without confusion. Once the price is agreed on, the item better be in perfect condition. Even Virgos aren't this bad! The item must not have a flaw or it will be returned and the storekeeper will get an earful about it too. The Scorpio will not relent until the flaw is corrected. In the end, it's easier to let the Scorpios have the control they need. After all, they're good at it. If you try and fight them on it, you will be sure to lose because they will never give up and they will have no problem cutting you off completely if they choose that course. Remember that they are only trying to protect themselves, not hurt you, and if you are one of the chosen few who they love, count yourself as lucky.
