The Sun in the Houses...

The sun represents your personality, and its sign is the one in your chart that is most obvious to other people. On a deeper level, it's also the part of you that you are always trying to improve. The sun represents a quest in your life. Skills that you work on or elements of your personality that you try to improve are seen in the sign and house of your sun in your natal chart. It is a powerful force in your chart and most people put great effort into developing their sun. The needs of your sun are important to the overall mental and spiritual health of a person. A person who does not give ample attention to developing their sun will lack enthusiasm and faith in the future. The sun contributes to a person's happiness in that it always points to the future. Spending time engaged in the activities of the house where your sun is located promotes a satisfying feeling in your life and good self-esteem.

The sun shows how you want to shine in the world
and what makes you proud of yourself.

Sun in the 1st House...

With the sun in the first house, great effort is put into creating and maintaining a good self image. The way they are perceived by others is paramount to first-house sun people. These people want to be proud of themselves and the way they come across to the world. A sunny disposition is generally attributed to this placement and a positive attitude is normally displayed. There is concern over physical appearance and people with a first-house sun will want to look their best. A proud attitude is found and if slighted or embarrassed, this person will feel it as an affront to their whole being.

Sun in the 2nd House...

With a second-house sun, a person's identity is developed and expressed by defining personal values and accumulating objects of value. There is a driving force in the chart holder to declare to themselves and the world what exact things they feel are worthy of their time and effort. In the second house, the sun creates an overwhelming need for the chart holder to live life their own way and for themselves. The mission of the sun here is to define and develop the wants of the chart holder. Second-house sun people take great pride in their values and their possessions and may be inclined to brag or talk about their belongings and stances on issues.

Sun in the 3rd House...

A third-house sun is driven to learn, explore and enjoy their immediate environment. The third-house sun person enjoys being on the go and is easily bored. Third-house suns may tend towards being more intellectual or more social. For the more social types, whatever is happening with their friends and family is important to them and they want to stay in touch and keep close contact with these people, especially their family. Information is generally obtained from the news and although they find the news interesting and will check it daily, they don't probe deeply into issues. For the more intellectual types, there is an uncontainable desire to acquire knowledge. They relish in taking various pieces of knowledge and putting them together like puzzles that need solving. An interest in any type of vehicle, such as, bicycles, cars, or skate boards, is common from a young age with third-house suns. Social or intellectual, early schooling is a central issue regardless of whether the experience is positive or negative.

Sun in the 4th House...

The chart holder with a fourth-house sun is not happy unless their home life is happy. Because the fourth house can be deep and emotional, the sun here has to work extra hard to liven and inspire things. They thrive and excel in a home that is active, alive, open and loving. If they aren't in this type of home environment, they will not feel invigorated about their life. They will strive to make the changes necessary to give them the home and family life they need. A fourth-house sun person takes pride in their heritage, and respects their ancestors along with the trials and difficulties they endured to advance the family line to its current point. With this position, the chart holder feels that their ancestors, current family and their house truly make and reflect exactly who they are. Fourth-house suns often reminisce about their childhood as wonderful and positive. They tend to remember the good and dismiss the bad as they are acutely aware of how their childhood made them who they are today.

Sun in the 5th House...

The sun is comfortable in its own house. In fact, it is driven to shine here. At its best, it creates a chart holder who is confident about who they are and how they affect others. They freely express themselves using whatever medium suits the moment and they dish out affection like they're a fast-food restaurant. At worst, the sun in the fifth house is constantly striving to feel completely alive and confident enough to let down their guard and really trust people enough to express themselves genuinely. If unable to find true self-expression, a fifth-house sun can choose chronic partying as a substitute because alcohol and other chemicals make it easier for them to express themselves. Either way, a fifth-house sun always loves to be in love. Every new romance is like a new infusion of life for the chart holder. The person with this placement will look forward to having children because through children they know they are further developing themselves.

Sun in the 6th House...

A sixth-house sun can be a blessing or a curse. With the sun located here, the chart holder's driving need in life is to shine by living life well, primarily, by remaining healthy and mastering a skill. This creates a person who is skilled at their work and at navigating the practical challenges of day-to-day living. However, this also creates a dilemma which can generate a great deal of stress. These people can be haunted by the question of how "well" is "well enough"? To make matters worse, the sixth house is vague because it doesn't focus on a particular part of life. Rather it is about the chart holder's manner of living life. Therefore, in the sixth house, the sun's drive to shine and be its best can feel overwhelming because its rays are cast over almost every task. Everything the chart holder does in daily life is subject to this need to do things correctly or even perfectly. A sixth-house sun is capable of great achievement. These people can do things so well that they can actually reach new levels. By perfecting an existing skill, they can turn it into a whole new product. But they can also put so much effort into this that they burn out mentally and physically. By remembering that the key to the sixth house is "caring in service to others", sixth-house sun people can refocus their drive to shine here into caring for others and allowing people to care for them. This isn't easy because the sun wants to take charge and shine to satisfy itself, but it can be done.

Sun in the 7th House...

People who have their sun in the seventh house of their natal chart crave relationships with people. Their need to grow and shine in their own self-expression is provided through one-to-one interactions with other people. These chart holders see themselves more clearly when they are relating with other people. Masters at attracting people into relationships, they are also extremely skilled at negotiating with them and know how to get what they want from people. Because their own needs are served by relating with other people, seventh-house suns can't help themselves from seeking out interactions with people. The reactions and feedback seventh-house people get from interacting with people serve as reflections of themselves and serve to define themselves. Seventh-house sun chart holders can accomplish a great deal in life because they know how to manipulate people. However, this position can be frustrating because they rely on other people for their ability to shine in the world. They are often very complimentary towards people. Seventh-house suns are acutely aware of their leverage in relationships and are never afraid to use this leverage to get their way. The more mature seventh-house suns are good at using this leverage without the other person being aware of it, but less mature chart holders are more transparent. The seventh-house sun position can produce a person who enjoys relationships so much that only a few are not enough to satisfy them. They can be fickle about partners because new partners inspire them and allow them to see themselves in new ways. Seventh-house suns or those with Leo on the descendant often look for relationships with Leo-like people who are outgoing, lively and expressive.

Sun in the 8th House...

An eighth-house sun is constantly driven to engage in relationships, and they spend most of their time entangled in them. This can be a painful placement where the eighth-house person gives too much in relationships and ends up feeling used. The sun always wants to shine, and in the eighth house, it wants to shine through deep, intimate relationships. Unfortunately, not everyone is as passionate as them, which can cause a great deal of pain for an eighth-house sun. People are often casual about relationships and eighth-house suns often experience many ups and downs at the hands of these whimsical people. A father who was lost in his own emotion or caused emotional pain is common for the chart holder with this placement, and finding peace with this becomes a life-long quest sought in the chart holder's intimate relationships throughout their life. Yet it always seems there is something lacking. The void seems impossible to fill because the eighth-house person relies on other people to fill it for them through relationships. Although they feel driven to find themselves and shine in this world through other people, they find more inner strength by learning to shine on their own. Healthy relationships are their lifeblood and when the eighth house sun doesn't have to waste energy battling with unhealthy relationships, they have freedom to grow in their own right. The greatest gift for an eighth-house sun person is a deeply committed, soulful relationship that allows them to shine by giving themselves to another person while also learning to grow on their own.

Sun in the 9th House...

Some of the most ardent travelers are those with ninth-house suns. The world calls to them, and they are driven to experience every part of it as adventures to be had. The more far-off and exotic the place is, the more they are drawn to it. These chart holders feel like they are an important ingredient in the fabric of life. They want to make a difference in the world and so they are not shy about voicing their opinions. Furthermore, they act on these opinions on how the rules of the world should be. From frequent conversations with neighbors to spread their message around their home town, to organized missions in foreign countries where they deliver the message to the masses, ninth-house suns are confident about their messages and make sure they are heard. In their youths, ninth-house suns may join the military to satisfy their need to make a difference in the world, experience different cultures, learn about the world and soak in life on a grand scale. Acting as a foreign exchange student is appealing to these young people as well. As adults they make excellent teachers, internet bloggers, religious leaders, motivational speakers, ambassadors or writers. Any forum where opinions can be expressed and heard feels invigorating to these chart holders. The father of the chart holder may be seen as somewhat detached. The chart holder may have experienced the absence of the father for a period of time or the father may be seen as more committed to his ideals than to his family.

Sun in the 10th House...

A powerful placement, the sun in the tenth house combines the sun's drive to shine with the house of status and achievement. It's a nice fit and it can work well in helping the chart holder achieve great status. However, keep in mind that this placement means the chart holder is always on display to the public. Having a powerful planet like the sun in the highest, most public point of the chart offers little privacy. Think of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinksy who both had tenth-house suns along with a tenth-house sun in their composite chart. Nothing in their lives was private! Every gift can also be a curse, this powerful position should be used wisely. It grants natural leadership ability and respect from the community. People naturally look up to those with this placement. A tenth-house sun gives stamina to work hard in achieving goals driven by a burning desire for elevated status. Being born with this placement is like drawing a lucky card, but it must be treated with respect and care. Being a leader in the public eye is an advantage and gives power, but is also demands constant attention. Sloppy or selfish decisions can be devastating because they are noticed by everyone. But the tenth-house sun is resilient. It takes a lot of mistakes to bring them down. These chart holders have charisma and people have a natural respect for them. Used wisely, this position can be quite profitable.

Sun in the 11th House...

This is a powerful placement giving the chart holder the gift of social influence. We operate in a society and those with eleventh-house suns have the advantage of feeling driven to navigate social networks by exerting their influence to make change and gain from the world. They are driven to achieve leadership positions in groups and many excel at public speaking making politics a perfect career choice for these suns. George Washington, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Margaret Thatcher, and Benjamin Franklin are a few examples eleventh-house suns who found success as political leaders. On a smaller scale, eleventh-house suns are the first to organize clubs in school or as adults to lead or join an organization designed for social change. They feel that the group is more powerful than the individual and have a desire to improve the world by empowering groups. There is a detached feeling to this position of the sun falling in the house of Aquarius that allows these chart holders to focus on their social or political mission and their ability to sway the group rather than the concerns of individuals. David Koresh and Timothy McVeigh's eleventh-house suns are extreme example of this detached dynamic gone extremely awry. But they do serve to describe the theme. It's a detachment from the life of the individual in lieu of the social ideals that these people strive to achieve. It's a dynamic that naturally puts the individual second to the group. Eleventh-house suns don't always have a high comfort level in groups, but they always have a drive to be influential.

Sun in the 12th House...

The need to shine and feel vital in the world is diffused into a fog when the sun falls in the twelfth house. This placement indicates a disconnect from the father during childhood. It could be the death of the father, his absence or a father who is perceived as being preoccupied with everything except the chart holder. In any event, the twelfth-house sun person feels that their right to develop into someone who shines in the world isn't supported and assisted by their father. There is a feeling that they must "do it alone". They may spend some time wallowing in self-pity before they find the strength to accept the responsibility of finding and developing their hidden talents. In reality the sun always needs to develop on its own and any help it receives from others is nice and may make things easier in this material world, but in the end, the help may actually slow development. The twelfth house is the house of hidden talents, so once these chart holders get past feeling sorry for themselves for having to be so independent from such a young age, they are rewarded because all of the extra effort makes them shine sooner and stronger. Even after they learn to shine, twelfth-house sun people feel forever drawn back to that nebulous, unconscious, universal fog of their childhoods. An interest in religion or philosophy that explores greater, universal meanings in life or getting lost in the beautiful abyss of nature brings them back and satisfies this need. Some spend some time getting lost in the abyss of mind altering substances to recreate the feeling. These chart holders can teeter between feeling used and abused by the world and feeling compassionate toward the suffering of others. At worst, they can get lost in an unconscious self-pity and blame the world for feeling so lost and alone. At best, these feelings give them a deeply felt compassion towards the weaknesses, faults and sufferings of others and an ability to make it in the world completely on their own.
